From the light hitting your plane's surfaces to the shadows on the ground - for VFR flying it is very immersive. Over saturated and you get golden sunsets every day, but it just looks realistic. One thing that stands out for me in MSFS is the natural light simulation. From the early videos - XP12 will still require help in that area. With XP11 you need to spend a lot of time or money to get it looking decently. XP12 isn't here yet so it's impossible to compare. Custom payware or freeware airports really make a difference in both sims. XP default airports tend to have better layouts and less errors. Most airports are just OK - passable, but can be improved greatly. Ground in general looks great and you can easily navigate by landmarks/roads/rivers etc. Not only the ground textures are better, but the autogen gets a nice boost too.Įlevation meshes in MSFS aren't the best - mountains are a bit too rounded, however there are some mods for certain parts of the world. Microsoft Flight Simulator Game of the Year Edition offers 25 detailed planes, 38 handcrafted airports, 6 new Discovery Flights and weather system updates. If you open bing maps and check the aerial view for the area you want to fly in then you can see whether the satellite imagery is good quality or not - the sim looks much better in areas where Microsoft has high resolution imagery. There is a free mod for the default Cessna 152 and it's great for putting around and enjoying the scenery. Try MSFS with a month of xbox live service - you might even get it for $1 for the first month.
